Orange Madonna: Portrait of Portico.....a work in progress

$1,450.00

A mixed-media portrait of my friend Portico, envisioned as a modern Madonna. We were working together when I looked over and saw her eating an orange. Wrapped in a gauzy head covering and wearing a wistful, knowing smile, she seemed every bit the goddess of yore.

Portico is a fascinating woman who continually reinvents herself as a person, artist, and author. She is always evolving, changing, and becoming. In reflecting her, I intentionally left portions of the painting “unfinished”—a visual metaphor for the idea that the subject herself is not yet finished.

Paint markers, gold leaf, and graphite add layers of texture, symbolism, and luminosity, reinforcing the work’s mixed-media character and celebrating the many facets of a woman still in the process of becoming.
